Treemakers - Hugh Grant
Treemakers - Trees, tools, wire, pots
A long term member of central Coast Bonsai, starting with the club as a young lad, Hugh as continued to grow & shape his way in Bonsai.
TreeMakers is the studio and practice of bonsai professional Hugh R. Grant, located in the upper Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia. TreeMakers specialises in Australian Native trees and plants as bonsai subjects.
Tree Makers is an inquiry into the Australian landscape. With designs based in sustainable bonsai practices, our work explores forms from the Australian landscape. The work is informed by quintessential native living structures that represent both culture and nature. We seek to create a bridge of accessibility to Australian bonsai as an art form.
TreeMakers is a professional garden, nursery, creative studio, and store. We are at the forefront of deciphering and creating techniques for new Australian native species as well as informing how to best cultivate non-native species in the Australian climate. In our nursery, we develop a new age of bonsai material primarily sourced as native yamadori (landscape sources trees) and make these available to customers and students. We offer a range of trees from raw-design-ready material, specimens in production, to refined, highly-executed bonsai specimens.

Ken Poole - Substrates
Ken Poole — Bonsai Vendor
Available at the Bonsai Open: Akadama, Kanuma, Pumice, Ken Poole’s own special bonsai soil mix
Ken will be supplying high-quality substrates suitable for a wide range of species and growing styles, ideal for both beginners and experienced bonsai growers.
About Ken
Ken Poole’s bonsai journey began in the early 2000s when he joined a bonsai school as a beginner, starting with an English Oak grown from seed — a tree he nurtured and developed over more than 20 years. That long-term project, with its successes and setbacks, shaped his appreciation for patience, resilience and the quiet rewards that bonsai offers.
Through formal training and hands-on experience, Ken refined his skills in key areas such as nebari development, shaping and long-term tree planning, embracing the ongoing challenges that come with growing quality bonsai. He has a strong interest in a wide range of species, with a particular passion for Australian natives.
Contribution to the Bonsai Community
Ken is a long-time and active contributor to the Australian bonsai community, particularly through the AusBonsai forum, where he has shared articles, techniques, personal experiences and practical advice over many years. His willingness to document his journey and openly share knowledge has helped encourage and support growers at all stages of their bonsai path.
Always approachable and keen to talk trees, Ken enjoys helping others discover the depth and satisfaction that bonsai brings — whether through quality growing materials, practical guidance, or simply sharing stories from decades at the bench. -
